Bellini
: Giusseppe
Cipriani created the Bellini in Harry`s bar in Venice in 1943. Bloody
Mary : Fernand
“Pete” Peitot created the Bloody Mary in Harry`s bar in Paris in 1921. Brandy
Alexander : Probably
brought to light in 1922 and attributed to Harry MacElhone working at the
Ciro`s Club London. Bronx
: Johnny
Solon of thee Waldorf Astoria New York after a visit to Bronx zoo. Buck’s
Fizz : Created
by Mr McGary, bartender at Buck`s Club in London in 1921. Daiquiri
: The
original daiquiri was created in 1912 by Constantino Ribailaqua of La
Florida Bar, Havana, Cuba. Dry
Martini :
Some belive Jerry Thomas was responsible for the creation of the martini
in the late 1880`s when it was called a Martinez. There is a plaque in the
town of Martinez claiming its creation there and others believe a
bartender named Martini di Armmia di Taggia created it at the New York
Knickerbocker hotel. Certainly be 1900 the cocktail was well known to
barmen and customers in the US and Europe. Frozen
Daiquiri : The
first frozen daiquiri was created in 1912 by Constantino Ribailaqua of La
Florida Bar, Havana, Cuba. Gin
Fizz : First
mentioned in magazine articles in the 1870`s. Horse’s
Neck : The
original recipe was non alcoholic but around 1910 bourbon was added. Other
spirits were also used but brandy is now the most popular. Irish
Coffee : The
original recipe for Irish coffee was created by Joe Sheridan, the
head bartender at Shannon Airport in Ireland. John
Collins : The
original Collins was created by the head waiter at Limmers, Conduit
Street, London in the early 1800s. Kamikaze
: A
modern version of the Balalaika. Kir
: Farm
workers in Burgandy, France created this to make their wine more
drinkable. Kir
Royale : When
the wine was replaced by champagne the drink was given a new name. Mai-Tai
: There
are two claims to the original creation of the Mai-Tai. The authenticated
claim is for Don Beach at Don the Beachcomber Restaurant in Hollywood in
the 1930s. The other version is at Trader Vics in 1944. Manhattan
: The
Manhattan is attiributed to the Manhattan Club around 1874. Margarita
: Named
after the American actress Marjorie King and created by the owner of
“Rancho Gloria” near Tijuana, Mexico. Mimosa
: Different
from a Buck’s Fizz with the addition of 2 dashes of Grand Marnier. This
was created at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, France in 1925. Mojito
: Created
in 1942 by Angelo Martinez at the La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba. Negroni
: The
name originates from Count Camillo Negroni who regularly visited the
Casoni Bar in Florence and was created by Fosco Scarselli in 1919. Old
Fashioned : Colonel
James E Pepper, a bourbon distiller based in Kentucky and the bartender of
the Pendennis Club, Louisville created this cocktail. Pina
Colada : Two
barmen claim to have invented this. One is Ramon Marrero Perez of the
Caribe Hilton in 1954 and the other Don Ramon Portas Mingot of la
Barrachina Restaurant Bar in 1963. Planter’s
Punch : Created
in Jamaika to celebrate the opening of Myer`s Rum Distillery in 1879. Screwdriver
: Created
in the 1950s. Sezarac
: Invented by Amedee Peychaud about 1800 and
made its film debut in the James Bond Film “ Live and Let Die”. Singapore
Sling : Originally
created by Ngiam Tong Boon,
bartender at raffles Hotel Singapore in 1915. Tequila
Sunrise : A
mexican drink created in the 1930s. White
Lady
: Created by Harry MacElhone at Ciro`s Club,
London in 1919.
